PMJA Executive Director Terry Gildea announced today he is leaving his post as the organization’s executive director to become program director at WUNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The PMJA Board has elevated PMJA’s business manager, Christine Paige Diers into the role of interim executive director. Gildea’s last day with PMJA is April 16.
Gildea became Public Media Journalists Association’s first executive director in 2018. At that time, the organization was called Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI). Since becoming the first professional full-time leader of the organization, Gildea has seen PMJA through many important projects including the formation and funding of the PMJA Editor Corps and a partnership with the Freedom Forum Institute focused on the Workplace Integrity Training Program. Gildea also worked with the PMJA board and membership to change the name of the organization in 2019.
Gildea was elected to the then PRNDI board as a representative in 2013 while he was news director at KUER in Salt Lake City. In 2016 he became board president. He is thankful for unique opportunities to play a positive role in shaping PMJA’s future and supporting its members.
“When I was elected to the board nearly eight years ago, I couldn’t have imagined I’d have a chance to play such a significant role in the growth of this organization,” said Gildea. “It has been a privilege to support my fellow journalists in public media while building an organization that serves their needs more effectively. I am very excited to join WUNC as their next program director. It’s a station I’ve admired my entire career.”
“We are a better organization because of the work of Terry Gildea,” PMJA Board President Johnathan Reaves states. “I am grateful for the way he has led PMJA, especially during a very challenging 2020. The pandemic actually brought us amazing opportunities that Terry helped create and partnerships that will place us in a good position for the future. I can’t thank Terry enough for his work and his friendship. I wish him nothing but the best at WUNC.”
Christine Paige Diers will take over as interim executive director once Gildea leaves. Paige Diers has worked for the organization for over 20 years - first in a part-time capacity, then as its full-time business manager.
“I am sad to see Terry go, but excited for him in this new opportunity,” said Paige Diers. “As interim executive director, I am committed to keeping the organization moving forward through the transition.”
“PMJA is in great hands with Christine as the interim executive director,” says Reaves. “I am thankful that she has agreed to take on this role and I look forward to continuing working with her during this transition.”
The PMJA board will conduct a search for the next executive director in the coming months. The organization’s annual conference will be virtual this year and take place on June 22, 23 & 24.
