Professional Bio
Brian Munoz is the Visuals Editor and a reporter at St. Louis Public Radio.
Munoz is a proud graduate of Southern Illinois University, where he received his degree in Journalism. He is fluent in Spanish, which allows him to connect with diverse communities and bring underreported perspectives to his work. In addition, he is DHEFAT, NARCAN, and Stop the Bleed certified.
Before joining STLPR in 2021, Brian worked as a visual journalist at USA TODAY, contributing to high-profile national and international stories — including coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the impact of COVID-19 on California’s healthcare system and Capitol Hill.
Earlier in his career, he served as a multimedia correspondent in rural southern Illinois, where his team’s reporting influenced changes in state law related to federal immigration contracting. He began his photojournalism journey through internships at The Arizona Republic and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, chasing beautiful light and building a strong foundation in storytelling.
His work has been recognized locally and nationally, earning honors from the Edward R. Murrow Awards, Editor & Publisher’s Eppy Awards, the Public Media Journalists Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the National Press Photographers Association.
Munoz is a proud alumnus of the Missouri Photo Workshop 75 and Eddie Adams Workshop XXXI. He has also served as a mentor with the NPR Next Generation Radio Project and the 2024 SIU Weekend Photojournalism Workshop.
Outside of work, he’s passionate about giving back to his community, binge-watching sports, and hunting for the next great thrifted find.
