About Us
Public Media Journalists Association supports, empowers and advocates for journalists working in public media
Public Media Journalists Association is the professional home for journalists working in public radio, public television, and digital public media. We're a member-led community of newsroom leaders, reporters, editors, and producers who care deeply about the future of public media journalism — and about supporting each other in doing it well.
Our mission
Public Media Journalists Association supports, empowers and advocates for journalists working in public media.
In that endeavor we seek to foster high ethical standards in the practice of journalism through:
- Providing training and peer learning opportunities that allow our members to improve and excel in their work, giving stations a venue for sharing innovations and best practices
- Working for greater diversity, equity and inclusion throughout public media
- Championing members working to create environments free of discrimination and harassment
- Creating and cultivating pathways to support diverse leadership
- Advocating for a society where journalism can be practiced freely without threat

Who we serve
Our members work at public radio stations, public television stations, and digital newsrooms in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Guam. From large metro stations to small community outlets, PMJA brings together the people making public media journalism happen.
A bit of history: Formerly known as Public Radio News Directors Inc., PMJA was established in 1985 to serve those responsible for the direction, reporting, and editing of local public media newsrooms. In 2019, the organization expanded its name and scope to reflect the full range of journalists working across the public media landscape.
