Professional Bio
Krista Almanzan puts people at the center of her work. As an audience researcher, she helps journalism organizations connect with, understand and design for their audiences. As an editor, she works with reporters to hone their craft and find their voice.
As a 2021 John S. Knight Senior Journalism Fellow at Stanford, Krista worked at the intersection of local news and audio innovation. Krista designed, prototyped and tested audio products to help local newspapers reach new audiences and get more value out of their existing content. Prior to her Senior Fellowship, Krista was in the JSK Journalism Fellowship class of 2020.
Her journalism career spans two decades in public radio and local television. Krista was News Director at KAZU, the NPR station for the Monterey Bay area. There she led a small newsroom, which won two national Edward R. Murrow Awards, 27 regional awards from the Radio, Television Digital News Association and numerous honors from the Public Media Journalists Association. Krista was part of NPR’s inaugural reporting collaboration on the military called Back at Base. She has also served as a mentor for NPR’s Next Generation Radio Project. She has freelance reported for KQED, Capital Public Radio and NPR.
Krista started her journalism career as a reporter for local television stations in Iowa. She worked at KTVO in Ottumwa and KGAN in Cedar Rapids. There she covered two presidential elections, natural disasters and uniquely Iowa events like RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa).
Krista is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston. During her time there she studied abroad in Buenos Aires Argentina and spent a co-op semester working at Disney World. Krista currently lives in northern California.
