News Ambassadors Director Shia Levitt is an accredited trainer of both CTN and Solutions Journalism methods, and gave a preview of the depolarization strategies at Citizen University's fall webinar on "Strategies for Journalists and Storytellers to Strengthen Civic Culture."
Shia Levitt is a longtime public radio journalist who has reported for NPR, Marketplace and other outlets from the US, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In 2022, she was a News Editor at KALW, mentor for KALW's Audio Academy Fellows program and supervising editor of the teen podcast, #tbh. In addition to reporting and producing, Levitt has taught radio journalism both at the college level and to teens, including for WNYC’s Radio Rookies, for UNICEF in Haiti, and at Mills College and CUNY Brooklyn College and Queens College.
Shia is an accredited trainer of both Solutions Journalism and the depolarization reporting strategies known as Complicating the Narratives, and was a 2023–24 Complicating the Narratives Fellow with Solutions Journalism Network.
She now directs News Ambassadors, a project that enlists college journalists to help local newsrooms fill gaps in coverage of underreported communities, specifically with stories informed by reporting strategies that center stronger, resilient communities. News Ambassadors trains journalists on rigorous tools of Solutions Journalism, Engagement Journalism and Depolarization Reporting Strategies. We then help amplify the strongest resulting stories informed by these methods so they reach audiences beyond campus.
