Professional Bio

Having grown up in southern New England, Michayla is proud to help tell stories about Connecticut as CT Public’s state government reporter. In her role Michayla examines how state policy decisions impact people across the Nutmeg state. Her stories range from cost of living to human services, health and climate change, to caregiving and education. Blending solutions, personal stories and history together are paramount to her audio reporting.

Michayla graduated with her masters degree in health and science reporting from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. While getting her degree, she joined Connecticut Public in 2022 as an intern with the talk show unit, and then the newsroom. She’s been reporting with the team ever since.

Before returning to school, Michayla was news director at a community radio station in Ithaca, NY. She’s also had roles as a news producer and host for various audio outlets covering New York state. She studied media production at Ithaca College, graduating in 2017, where she also first got her start in on-air broadcasting – doing everything from hosting and producing music shows at all hours of the day, to starting a mental health podcast, to training new on-air talent.

Michayla was among the team that RTDNA awarded a National Edward R. Murrow award for Connecticut Public’s in-depth field coverage about the “thousand-year storm” in August 2024 that devastated parts of western CT. Her government reporting has been recognized by the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists. And, her features about climate change in the state have aired on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and the New England News Collaborative.

When not on deadline, Michayla is probably making something out of clay or strolling outside with her husband, and rescue dog, Elphie.
