RECORDINGS AVAILABLE – PMJA Census Training 2022

Trainings, Webinar recordings,

The PMJA Training Committee is offering a two-part series of webinars focused on the U.S. Census.

PART ONE: U.S. Census data: how to find it and how to use it – RECORDING AVAILABLE

Part one of this two-part training was focused on U.S. Census data: how to find it and how to use it to find story ideas, answer questions about your region and make your stories more robust.

Noemi Mendez, a data dissemination specialist with the US Census who has worked with many journalists and media organizations, walked through finding data on the US Census website. The recording of this webinar is now available. See below.

PART TWO: Case studies on redistricting – Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. ET

In this webinar, reporters shared their experiences and tips for covering redistricting. This is probably the most high-profile way Census numbers get put into action and the tools being used by those crafting possible maps has become far more sophisticated. Our panelists from Texas, Pennsylvania and Colorado, shared the vast differences in each state’s redistricting histories.
Panelists: Ashley Lopez, KUT, Austin, TX
Katie Meyer, WHYY, Philadelphia, PA
Bente Birkland, Colorado Public Radio, Denver, CO
