Professional Bio
Brittany Hailer is a staff writer for The Marshall Project - Cleveland. She reports on local criminal justice stories including youth care homes and jail deaths in Cleveland, Ohio. She helped create an Investigate This! toolkit on How to Report on Deaths in Jails and Prisons.
Hailer joined The Marshall Project after serving as the director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Nonprofit Journalism, a news outlet she co-founded in 2021. She won the best investigative journalism award in the 2022 Nonprofit News Awards for her reporting on jail deaths. She has also won several regional Golden Quill awards, including the 2023 award for best investigative journalism. She built Pennsylvania’s first-ever jail death database as a reporting fellow for The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting.
