Professional Bio
Megan Garvey manages reporters, editors, and producers to deepen the reach and impact of LAist's award-winning journalism. Under her leadership, LAist's online audience has reached historic highs with a focus on original and distinct storytelling and investigations. Garvey has worked closely with other LAist newsroom leaders to integrate an engaged journalism approach throughout coverage, from story selection to story framing and distribution. She has also broadened the newsroom’s partnerships, including the California Reporting Project and ProPublica.
Before coming to LAist in 2018, Garvey spent two decades at the Los Angeles Times as reporter, assignment editor, assistant managing editor, and deputy managing editor and contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning breaking news coverage.
Garvey has a reputation for innovation. At the L.A. Times she led groundbreaking projects, including the creation of a RealTime news desk and interactive databases including Mapping LA, The Homicide Report. California's War Dead and others.
Prior to the Times, Garvey worked as a reporter for the News & Observer in North Carolina and as a news aide for The Washington Post.
